At 2:45am this morning I was rudely awakened. Actually at first it wasn't so rude, but the more I think about it, the more it bothers me.
I was sound a sleep this morning in my own little world when I heard a huge crashing noise that was followed but an even bigger flash of light. I remember waking up thinking O.K. Scott you got your thunderstorm you have been waiting for. With spring like temps the last couple of days we have greedily been talking about spring and what we enjoy about it.
Anyhow, I noticed it was really dark out, there was no yard light on outside so I got up to see what the heck was going on. As I rose up out of bed, I noticed a huge fireball about 2 miles south of our house.
At first we just thought a power sub station blew up or something? and then we decided to go check it out. We live in a very rural part of the state and didn't want anyone stranded or hurt looking for help in the dark. As we got closer we could see a good fire burning but could not make out what was going on. A semi truck had pulled up and the driver was running across the road, so Scott got out and went to help him as I parked the truck and called the police. Power lines were down and by looking at the mess, I thought two cars had hit head on. I was wrong- it was only one car but the fella hit the power pole, sheared it off at the base, left half of his car under the line and we found him and the rest of car 500 feet or more out in a corn field and it was too late, he was long gone.
Two things bother me about this; I don't know who he was, but I know he was way too young to die and I know there is a family grieving for him as I write this.
The other thing that really bothers me is the fact that people look down on truck drivers. I drove truck for over 10 years and could write a book on all of the bad comments, dirty looks, gestures, and so on that I was given over that period of time. This morning I saw two men (truck drivers) running like they were going to save their own child. They didn't have to, they just did. So
please, the next time a truck driver slows you down or turns on his blinker to get over in the other lane give him or her the room and space to do so, because most likely they are not doing it on purpose or to piss you off. It takes time to get 80000 pounds off and running or to slow it down.
Remember, there are bad eggs in every walk of life, but we are not all bad. They may be on there way home to a family just like you. They also might be there to save your life or someone you know in the future.
So long young man...
